Ever wonder how we got from the music of the early 20th century to where we are now? How the concept of “taking a solo” or spontaneous improvisation worked its way into our expectations? Ever consider what modern time is and how the concept of swing set American feet free?
Well, wonder no longer. These subjects and more will be covered when Odyssey USA features an “Introduction to Jazz History” as part of its late spring curriculum.
The lifelong learning program is geared toward those who believe it’s never too late to pick up something new and are tantalized by discovery. It offers a variety of subjects throughout the year and this spring Lagniappe Arts editor and jazz enthusiast Kevin Lee (AKA me) will take a class through an eight-week acquaintance with America’s only original art form.
Classes begin March 27 and will be held every Friday at 3 p.m. Registration is available now.
