Sisters 16-year-old Lennon Stella and 12-year-old Maisy Stella grew up in a musical home. Their first experience in the music business was as members of their family’s band, The Stellas. Eventually, the two began performing as a duo and gained worldwide attention for their YouTube videos performing hits such as The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey.” Their career path also took them into the acting world, with recurring roles on the ABC TV series “Nashville.”
Lennon & Maisy took time out from their busy schedule to get acquainted with the Gulf Coast.
Stephen Centanni: Siblings are a funny thing in the music world. Sometimes it’s not always a good experience to be in a band with your brother or sister. What’s it like for Lennon & Maisy?
Lennon Stella: It’s pretty good for the most part. We’re sisters, so we do fight at times. When it comes to performing, it’s always super fun.
Maisy Stella: We love doing it. Things are very comfortable between the two of us.
Centanni: Your family is heavily involved in music. Was it expected for you two to go into the music business?
Lennon: It kinda was, yeah. Our parents are insane musicians, so we grew up in that environment, you know. It definitely wasn’t a struggle for my family that we love music as much as we do.
Centanni: Before performing as Lennon & Maisy, you both were in The Stellas, which is your family’s band. What made you two want to start performing as a duo?
Maisy: We’ve always kind of been Lennon & Maisy.
Lennon: It was so weird. It just fell into place. We started singing, and Maisy sings harmonies insane. It kind of all just happened. We never really thought about it or planned it. At first, our parents would perform, then we would get up on stage after them, just me and Maisy. Then it got to the point we were just playing more, and it just started to happen.
Centanni: You’re originally from Ontario, and now you’re living in Nashville, which is a very different place. Do you ever miss home?
Lennon: Yeah, we miss home more for our family than we do the actual place itself. We do love Nashville so much. It’s super awesome.
Centanni: You guys have done quite a bit of television as well. What made you two want to audition for “Nashville?”
Maisy: This is a sort of crazy story, but I can summarize it, because it’s super long. I originally auditioned, and they liked me, I guess. They looked at a video of me singing, and they found Lennon. They saw that there was two of us. So they brought us in, and we landed the parts.
Lennon: Maisy originally auditioned when she was 8, and they had an older role. Then, they brought me in, because they saw a video of me and Maisy singing together. They asked me to audition, and I had no plans of being an actress. I had never thought about doing it. I always assumed that it was Maisy’s thing. I hadn’t had any experience with it. I was like, “OK.” So I did, and then it totally fell into place. I guess they liked what we did.
Centanni: Between TV and performances and school, what’s a typical day like in the life of Lennon & Maisy?
Lennon: There is no such thing as a typical day. We are all over the place, always. We’re here, there and everywhere. We don’t know how to have a normal day. It used to be a little more normal, when we were in public school. Now that we’re doing online school, we’re just very up in the air. We might go to the studio, then film and then travel, but it totally depends on the day. A lot of the time, we’re shooting for “Nashville.”
Centanni: Do you miss regular old public school?
Lennon: I think Maisy does more than I do. I hated public school.
Maisy: I liked it there. I liked my friends I had at school, but I hated the teachers and lockers, ugh!
Centanni: Do you prefer the acting or the music?
Maisy: We prefer either. We both love them a lot.
Lennon: I personally would prefer the music more than the acting.
Maisy: I probably would prefer acting.
Centanni: You got to perform for Taylor Swift. What was that experience like?
Lennon: That was the CMA’s two years ago. We were presenting her an award, and we sang her song for her. It was super quick and super fun. Me and Maisy were dying.
Maisy: After we sang it, she was telling me to, “Come here.” So, I went over there, and she gave me a compliment and kissed me on the forehead and both of my cheeks. I had red lipstick all over my face and in my hair. I was like, “OK, I’m never washing my face again. I’m never taking a shower ever again.”
Centanni: That sounds like a pretty memorable experience. Would you say that’s been the highlight of your career, so far?
Lennon: To be truthful, I think my most insane memory would be singing with Jason Mraz. He’s my idol and singing with him is insane. We’ve had these pretty awesome things we’ve been so fortunate to experience.
Maisy: Maybe it was meeting the president. That was pretty cool.
Centanni: You’ve had your “YouTube Sessions.” When is the next studio album from Lennon & Maisy coming?
Lennon: We’ve been writing, and we’ll be working on it, hopefully soon. We’ve been into writing to a point to where we would have lots of songs and pick through them. We definitely hope to have an album out soon.
Centanni: Where do you want this project go? Do you think one of you will move more towards music and the other towards acting?
Lennon: I would hope not. I think right now we’re focusing on writing.
Maisy: And keeping motivated.
Lennon: Yeah, keeping motivated until we get a ton of songs. My hopes and dreams are to release an album and tour on the album and continue on with the music. In between that, hopefully, we could be shooting movies. We’re feeling it all out right now. Keeping with the acting and the music would be ideal for us.
