When Banditos made their way from Birmingham to Mobile, locals quickly fell in love with this band’s unique music. The talented group concocted a unique, hybridized sound combining everything from ragtime jazz to folk to country. When their style grew beyond the confines of their hometown, the band relocated to Nashville. The group used their time in Music City constructively, finding a label home at Bloodshot Records. They also began touring extensively nationwide and winning over fans.
Banditos are currently showcasing their trademark sound on their self-titled, full-length debut, which represents the ideological foundation that makes this band great. There is no stand-out member on the album; its instrumentation, arrangement and engineering allows listeners to experience each member’s individually as part of a collective effort. Banditos’ musical fury is evident on the opening track, “The Breeze, ” where country and garage rock crash together for a rocking anthem. “Golden Grease” mixes banjo with raunchy blues before the album slides into true seduction with the soulful track “No Good.” The album ends on a somber note with the haunting “Preachin’ to the Choir.”
Banditos’ debut album is an exploration in musical evolution. This band has grown, and the end results are wonderful.
