The Saenger Theatre felt the bitter sting of 2020 more than most local venues. Just as this historic showplace was completing renovations, COVID restrictions forced the Jewel on Joachim to cancel or reschedule a number of great concerts. With recent COVID precautions in place, the Saenger is once again opening its doors and filling its calendar with a lineup of great shows.
The Allman Betts Band will be one of the first touring bands to grace the stage of the Saenger since COVID silenced the venue’s stage. The Allman Betts Band brings together the progeny of one of Southern rock’s most iconic bands. This group features guitarists and vocalists Devon Allman and Duane Betts with bassist Berry Oakley Jr., who are the sons of Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts and Berry Oakley of Allman Brothers Band fame. Johnny Stachela (slide guitar), R. Scott Bryan (percussion), John Ginty (keyboards) and John Lum (drums) are also in the lineup.
When the group arrives in the Azalea City, the Allman Betts Band will bring live jams of tracks from their new album, “Bless Your Heart.” This release is “fueled by road-forged camaraderie and telepathic musical intensity” from a place Devon Allman has called “the United States of Americana.” The respective experiences of the band’s members are musically translated into 13 tracks. The grand, countrified rock ’n’ roll that reverberates through this release is honest and thoughtful.
“Bless Your Heart” trips across a number of rock styles. “Ashes of My Lovers” is a slow, hypnotic flashback back to classic ’60s surf rock. “Savannah’s Dream” conjures the intricate, jazz-infused deep tracks of the Allman Brothers Band. “Airboats & Cocaine” is an edgy heartland rock anthem, and “Southern Rain” gives the album a dose of soulful blues-rock. The versatility of this album should make for a memorable performance.
