Venue: The Blues Tavern, 2818 Government Blvd., www.bluestavern.com
The Bush League is bringing its Juketober Tour to the Azalea City. According to its website, this quintet was founded in 2007 on a front porch outside Richmond, Virginia. Hill Country Blues brought this band together, and it’s been traversing the nation, performing its take on this blues sub-genre. The band’s mastery of the Hill Country sound has allowed it to compete several times in a number of categories at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
“Didn’t See This Coming” is The Bush League’s latest offering. The album presents one of the heaviest blues acts on the modern touring circuit, which begins with the steady drive of “Hearse.” “Show You Off” takes on a soulful blues vibe that is accented by the band’s deep mix of guitar and bass. The album closes with one of the most epic versions of “Mannish Boy” ever heard. While Hill Country doesn’t dominate “Didn’t See This Coming,” the influence can be witnessed throughout this great work of modern blues.
