Birmingham jam band Ice Station Zebra will provide an evening of live, spontaneous musical creation. According to the band’s website, this quartet specializes in “creative improvisation, practiced orchestration and honest lyricism.”
Filled with psychedelic goodness, Ice Station Zebra’s improv attitude provides audiences with a new musical experience with each performance. The group focuses on momentary creation without sonic boundaries. For Ice Station Zebra, music takes on the attitude of an abstract artform painted with rhythms and tones.
Last year, the band released its full-length debut album, “Midnight.” While studio limitations might not reveal the band’s improv philosophy, “Midnight” provides listeners with a vision of possibilities in the live setting. One interesting aspect of this album is guitarist Ethan Maas and keyboardist Benton Crane shared duties on vocals. With the exception of the reggae sounds of “What Do You Want From Me,” “Midnight” is a great collection of Southern jam rock tunes with occasional alt. rock overtones.
