A new generation of artists who embrace classic traditions has reshaped the modern country world. While pop country is still a prominent facet in the industry, contemporary indie/outlaw country artists have made their presence known through respectable followings with unwavering dedication. Cody Jinks is a perfect example of this country music phenomenon. Jinks will be performing two dates in the Azalea City, one of which is already a sell-out show. Jinks will be performing at the Saenger in support of his latest album, “Mercy.”
Anyone questioning his passion for traditional country should look no further than “Mercy.” For the back-to-back ballads “Feeding the Flames” and “I Don’t Trust My Memories Anymore,” Jinks conjures the buttery baritone vocals of Randy Travis, which he gently lays between measures of sweet twang. However, Jinks does more than just give his audiences a taste of country nostalgia. The funky honky-tonk track “When Whiskey Calls the Shots” and the country rag opener “All It Cost Me Was Everything” shows that Jinks is not interested in repeating the past while maintaining his country sound.
“Highway Queen” Nikki Lane will be opening the show. While she has drawn comparisons to Jenny Lewis, Lana Del Rey and even Johnny Cash, Lane seems to be following the same path as Loretta Lynn. Worldwise lyrics filled with unfiltered life experiences are matched with a sugary voice with a touch of rawness. Lane’s vocals are a sweet baiting smile before a justified lyrical punch in the face. Her opening slot should earn her quite a few Azalea City fans.
