Patriotic Pops for July 4 in Fairhope

Posted by Kevin Lee | Jul 2, 2014 | Art Gallery | 0 |

We’ve done our best to make John Adams a prophet. Since the Founding Father wrote to his wife Abigail in 1776 that early July should thereafter be “solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other,” we’ve followed suit.

Few local settings are more picturesque for this specific holiday than Fairhope’s Henry George Park overlooking Mobile Bay. It’s a slice of small-town Americana constructed for just such events.

The evening show begins with a set from Doc Rogers and the Rock Dodgers, a blues-rock combo. Then conductors Dr. Roger Jones and Randy Davis will lead the Baldwin Pops through their paces, culminating in a fireworks display accompanied by rousing marches. There will also be a “Checkered Tablecloth Award” presented to the most interesting picnic set-up and a children’s march with flags.

The free event will be broadcast live on Fairhope radio station WABF AM 1220.
