Police in Mobile are looking for a shoplifting suspect they claim dropped and accidentally discharged a firearm while attempting to escape from security officers at the Bel Air Mall.
According to a statement from the Mobile Police Department, the incident happened shortly after 11 a.m., Dec. 23, when security at Dillards attempted to detain a man for suspected theft of property.
During the altercation, police say a gun fell from the suspect’s possession and accidentally went off. It’s unclear at this point whether the gun was discharged inside or outside of the store.
There have been no injuries reported at this time, though the suspect was able to flee the location.
Police are have since announced that they’re are looking for 28-year-old Jermiah Cecil Johnson in connection to the incident. Anyone with information on Johnson’s whereabouts is asked to call police at (251) 208-7211.
