Authorities in Mobile County are searching for a suspect connected to an early morning murder reported near the General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge in Creola.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office responded to a request from the Creola Police Department to assist with the investigation of the murder, which was reported by a witness around 2 a.m. on the morning of Nov. 10.

At the scene, officers located Joe Nathan Thomas deceased from an apparent gunshot wound to the back of his head. According to a witness officers identified only as a female, Thomas was shot by 30-year-old Joseph Carter.

At the scene, the witness told investigators she and Thomas had been with Carter earlier in the evening when she heard a gunshot and saw Thomas fall to the ground. After fleeing into the woods nearby, the witness called 911. According to police, she’s not being treated as a suspect and has not been charged with a crime.

Police in Creola, Sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Marshalls are currently searching for Carter and have asked that anyone with information of his whereabouts contact 251-574-8633.
