Punk Rock Flea Market
Date: Sunday, March 24 with doors at 8 a.m.
Venue: Satori Coffee House, 5460 Old Shell Rd., www.satori-coffee.com
Satori Coffee House will be providing the Azalea City with an edgy Sunday Funday. This legendary West Mobile establishment will be collaborating with Nearly Dead Threads for Satori’s first ever Punk Rock Flea Market.
Before the flea market opens, Satori will be slinging breakfast, mimosas and Bloody Marys for vendors and “early birds.” Afterwards, a number of local vendors and artists will be peddling their wares as a six-band line-up entertains the crowd.
Three bands will be representing Mobile’s underground scene. Thee Phuxxless will deliver a punk mélange that falls somewhere between Dead Milkmen, The Vandals and Dead Kennedys. S.O.S.S. will give the crowd a healthy taste of original punk anthems from its album “Mobile Zoo.” A regular on the local punk scene, S.O.S.S. features a merciless sound filled with fuzz and reverberation. Jerry Grotto might be the bill’s most interesting band. This musical act’s strange but catchy sound is riddled with nuances of folk, country, punk and psychedelic styles.
The three locals will be matched with three out-of-towners. New Orleans’ Casual Burn will overload the crowd with a style that is equal parts noise rock and punk. Pensacola trio Surrounder will add to this underground mix with a set steeped in beautiful classic garage influences. When the flea market ends, Pittsburgh-based band Calyx (featuring scene expatriate Caitlin Bender) will be throwing an epic after-party with its “hard pop pizza punk.”
