Annual strawberry festival

Gear up for rosé season as Red or White of Mobile hosts its rosé tasting event Tuesday, April 30, 6-8 p.m. Full disclosure, I usually start the meal with a rosé no matter what the outdoor thermometer says, but it’s so much better as the temps rise. Educate yourself in their private dining room as you take on still and sparkling rosés augmented, of course, with nibbles from Chef Arwen.
You cannot beat the price. Admission to this gloriously tasty event are only $20 per person! Grab a date and a couple of tickets at redorwhite.com. I’ll see you there.
Annual Strawberry Festival comes to Loxley
And you thought your festival was old! Chances are it hasn’t been around as long as this one. Baldwin County’s own Strawberry Festival turns 32 this year. On Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14, Loxley Municipal Park will be covered with vendors, carnival rides, children’s activities, classic cars, live music — and strawberries. There was even a Little Miss Strawberry pageant leading up to this.
Our favorite and sweetest event is known for its strawberry shortcake, but you’ll also be able to earn those calories by participating in their third annual 5K race beginning that morning at 7:30 a.m. as runners meander through the downtown area. Hurry up and get out of the way, because a fun run begins at 8:15 a.m.
Although the festival is free, proceeds from the event benefit Loxley Elementary and ARC Baldwin County. Be sure to get a flat of strawberries to take home, but eat the shortcake there.
Dauphin Island Gumbo Cook Off
It’s time for the 10th annual Dauphin Island Gumbo Festival and Cook Off, Saturday, April 20, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo Headquarters. Teams throw down the gloves and brown the roux for some bare-knuckle competition as you get to spend four hours guzzling gumbo and listening to live music by Jamell Richardson.
Proceeds from this decade-old event go to help fund the new Dauphin Island Community Center. At the time of this writing, ticket outlets had not been announced. Keep an eye on Facebook for updates.
The August House opens in Spring Hill
New to Spring Hill is the August House at 4513 Old Shell Road, the latest endeavor from the folks at Kraken Catering. What started as a catering business led to a food truck and has now morphed into a full-service restaurant, bar and event space in one of our area’s most charming buildings behind The Holiday.
So far we’ve only seen a soft opening, but promises of a grand opening are sure to be announced soon. If it’s anything like Kraken Catering’s menu, expect good results. We will let you know as soon as we find out the full hours. Until then, monitor their social media pages.
