Mobile police are continuing a search for an “armed and dangerous” robbery suspect they believe went on a weekend crime spree — robbing two stores on Government Street, shooting and carjacking a Midtown woman and stealing another car at gunpoint in Chickasaw.
According to police, Lionel “Deon” Gray used a handgun to rob Griffith Service Station on Saturday, June 3 at approximately 9:35 p.m. The following day, he returned to the area and executed a similar robbery of the Rite Aid at the intersection of Government and Ann Streets.
At approximately 4:18 p.m. on Sunday, police responded to a report of shots being fired at the 1100 block Selma Street. There, they heard a female screaming inside a nearby the residence who was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm in her own kitchen.
According to police, the woman said Gray knocked on the door, and when she let him in, he shot her and fled the scene in her vehicle. That vehicle was later recovered in Chickasaw, where Gray is believed to have abandoned it after committing a third commercial robbery.
Police have described Gray as “armed and dangerous.” According to Mobile County Metro Jail records, Gray is homeless and his an extensive criminal history in Mobile County that includes multiple charges for drug offenses, probation violations, robbery, burglary and attempted rape.Gray, 33, is also a registered sex offender, according to a database maintained by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Court records indicate that after being charged with “attempted rape” on two separate occasions in 2002, Gray pleaded guilty in a first-degree rape involving a 15-year-old girl.
In his most recent arrest, Gray was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia on May 26 but released two days later.
Gray is a black male with black hair and brown eyes. Records indicate Gray is 5-feet, 7-inches tall, roughly 156 pounds and has tribal art tattoos on his neck, right bicep, shoulder, and abdomen as well as another tattoo on his left bicep that reads, “Jackie, Terralyn.”
