Spanish Fort still No. 1; St. Michael earns first-ever ranking

Posted by Tommy Hicks | Sep 8, 2021 | News, Sports, The Score | 0 |

The Spanish Fort Toros, fresh off a victory over Gulf Shores last week, remain the No. 1-ranked team in Class 6A in this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association prep football poll, while the St. Michael Cardinals, off to a 2-0 start to the season, are ranked in the Top 10 for the first time in school history.

Other teams in the Lagniappe coverage area are also ranked in the ASWA poll this week. The rankings lead to a pair of No. 9 vs. No. 10 showdowns this week. Thursday night, No. 10-ranked St. Michael will face No. 9-ranked Williamson at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in a Class 4A, Region 1 matchup. In “The Battles of Old Shell Road,” No. 9-ranked St. Paul’s will travel to No. 10-ranked UMS-Wright for a Class 5A, Region 1 game Friday night.

In Class 7A, Theodore holds the No. 6 ranking and Daphne is ranked No. 10. Fairhope and Baker both received votes but did not earn a Top 10 ranking. In Class 5A, Faith Academy is ranked No. 5. In Class 4A, Vigor holds the No. 5 spot, while Mobile Christian received votes. In Class 3A, Bayside Academy is ranked No. 6.

Other than Spanish Fort, the other top-ranked teams this week include Thompson (7A), Pike Road (5A), Gordo (4A), Fyffe (3A), Mars Hill (2A), Brantley (1A) and Escambia Academy (AISA).
