The written word becomes a battleground when 10 students from eight high schools in three Alabama counties meet to compete for a place in the state competition. In three rounds, eight will recite poems selected from an official anthology. In two rounds, a pair will recite original poems.
Poetry Out Loud is an annual national recitation contest for high school students sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, coordinated in Alabama by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the Alabama Alliance for Arts Education and in Alabama Region 1 by Mobile Arts Council.
