Some time has passed since the enigmatic Papa Mali has stepped on stage in the Azalea City. However, his rich musical legacy guarantees that new listeners and longtime fans will not be disappointed. In addition to his solo work, this New Orleans singer-songwriter/guitarist/producer has participated in a number of impressive lineups. His time with 7 Walkers found him working with Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), George Porter Jr. (The Meters) and lyrical master Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead, Bruce Hornsby). Papa Mali also lent his skills to the supergroup The M&M’s, which also included Stanton Moore and Robert Mercurio of Galactic as well as John Medeski of Medeski Martin & Wood.
Those who attend this show can expect round after round of eclectic jams. When it comes to his sound, Papa Mali soars with fretboard runs that thrive with few of the electric frills of guitar effects. Along the way, he delivers a swampy concoction of blues-rock, psychedelic and jam that refuses to be labeled. Dedicated local jam fans will not want to miss this one.
