It’s palindrome week. All week long the date is the same forward as it is backwards: 9.11.19 is 9.11.19 any which way you look at it. I don’t know why, but I find this very cool! And it’s a full moon on Friday, which is also Friday the 13th! Loony things are going to happen this week, y’all. It’s in the numbers and the stars after all.
But before you start howling at the moon, I have some other fun stuff to share with you. So let’s get to it!
HGTV show to feature Mobilian
Native Mobilian Luke Kiszla and his fiancé, Jayme Smith (from Austin, Texas), are set to appear on the Sept. 19 episode of HGTV’s “House Hunters.” Luke graduated from UMS, the University of Alabama and UA’s Law School. Jayme is finishing up law school at Alabama. Luke is currently working in Montgomery for Legislative Services and looking for permanent digs for he and his soon-to-be bride. Will they find an open floor plan, hardwood floors, granite countertops and no popcorn ceilings, as all the “House Hunters” seem to prefer? Tune in Sept. 19 to find out! Happy hunting!
My spies said comedian, musician and actor Whitmer Thomas, a native of Gulf Shores, was at the Flora-Bama on Monday night filming a comedy special. We hear it may be for HBO. He has a pretty impressive resume.
From a bio listed on the city of Orange Beach’s website: “Whitmer Thomas is a comedian, actor and filmmaker. He and his writing partner, Clay Tatum, ran the popular show ‘Power Violence’ every third Sunday at The Satellite in Los Angeles, which has now been taken over by ‘Whitmer Thomas & Pals,’ featuring some of the biggest names in comedy performing today. Whit has most recently appeared in ‘The Good Place’ (NBC), ‘The Walking Dead’ (AMC), ‘Glow’ (Netflix) and ‘You’re the Worst’ (FX), and voiced and created the ADHD animated series ‘Stone Quackers’ on FXX, featuring John C. Reilly. Whit can be seen in Lynn Shelton’s film ‘Sword of Trust’ opposite Marc Maron, Jillian Bell and Michaela Watkins. Whit recently signed to Sub Pop Records for his original music for ‘The Golden One,’ which has sold out venues in NYC, LA, Philly, Chicago, Seattle and Portland, and is now being produced as an hour-long special by Bo Burnham, Chris Storer and A24.”
I wonder if you will be able to see the Flora-Bama’s clothesline of bras in the special? In either case, we hope it is a huge success!
Allergy sufferers and many longtime fans of local watering hole and downtown institution The Garage were thrilled to hear it is now a non-smoking establishment. Though folks have always loved it and their awesome happy hour, many had stopped going as often because they couldn’t handle the cigarette smoke. Well that is now a thing of the past. And they have also freshened up the joint a bit by removing some old booths and adding new bar tables and chairs and such. And the smokers can still get their fix by stepping out to some nice patio tables and chairs out front. Or they could just quit smoking.
It sounds like a win-win! I can’t wait to check it out again!
That’s all I got this week. Just remember, whether rain or shine, dramatic or scandalous or some plain ol’ palindrome lovin’, I will be there. Ciao!
