The Alabama Coastal Foundation has partnered with Thompson Engineering, one of the state’s largest multi-disciplined engineering services firms, to promote recycling at corporate and public events. With a grant from the Thompson Foundation, ACF purchased 15 Clear Stream recycling containers, which are now available for groups in the Mobile area to use.
“It’s exciting to expand sustainability efforts in Coastal Alabama, and this support from Thompson Engineering allows new opportunities along the coast,” said Valerie Longa, ACF’s Eco-Team Coordinator. “We are eager to support events that consider impacts on the local environment and ways to be cleaner and greener.”
Thompson Engineering has already used the recycling containers at one of its annual events, and collected 436 pounds of recyclable materials. At the company’s fishing rodeo fundraiser on Dauphin Island, the containers were positioned around the event site for guests to use. During the course of the two-day event, materials were collected and sorted and then recycled at the new Mobile County Recycling Center. Alabama Coastal Foundation’s Eco-Team was onsite to coordinate the recycling effort. Materials recycled were glass; aluminum; cardboard and paper; and plastic.
“We sorted our recyclables at the entrance of the rodeo so people could watch the amount of collected materials grow each day,” said Mike Manning, Thompson Engineering Senior Vice President. “At the end of the event, many people commented when they saw just how much we kept out of the garbage and ultimately, our landfills.”
Thompson Engineering also provided garbage bags to everyone who registered to promote trash clean-up on the island.
Photos of recycling efforts at the Thompson Fishing Rodeo can be seen Alabama Coastal Foundation’s Facebook page. A variety of fishing rodeos and other events take place on Dauphin Island, including the largest in the state, the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. Just think of the conservation and preservation that could be achieved if all of the fishing rodeos took on recycling and sustainability initiatives. Local businesses and event planners interested in event sustainability are welcome to contract with the Eco-Team to offer its services.
