Mobile vocalist Joyce Sylvester has made quite a name for herself in the past decades, displaying her bravura and beautiful tones with Mobile Opera, Musica Sacra, Bella Voce and as an instructor at both the universities of Mobile and South Alabama. For this faculty recital at USA, she has a program tuned just for Black History Month that displays both her virtuosity and versatility.
Moving On, Moving Up finds Sylvester honoring African-American female singers through various eras, evoking opera, jazz, blues and gospel in the wide-ranging program. Former GMAA recipient Jane Williamson will narrate and pianist Robert Holm will accompany Sylvester. The program is for all ages and lasts just beyond an hour.
Entrance is $8 for adults, $5 for USA faculty, staff, students, youth under 18 and senior citizens. Cash or check only.
