June appears to be a month of metal from the Azalea City’s past. Last week, the members of Mutant Speed and Third World Citizen debuted their Rotting World project. This week, the members of Obsydeon will reunite for an evening of “Gulf Coast Extreme Metal.” Obsydeon brings together the metallic knowledge of Jason Long, Lee White (Southern Grudge, Even Still), Jeff Pardue (Blackout, Apathy Ensues) and Jason Few (D.R.E.A.D.). Few’s other band, D.R.E.A.D., will also be lending support.
Southern Grudge will be blasting across the Alabama Music Box stage too. Formed in 2005, this metal outfit from the badlands of North Mobile County has been once again making its presence known along the Gulf Coast. This incarnation features Chad O’Rear (guitar/vocals), Lee White (bass) and Tyler Fleming (drums). In recent Southern Grudge news, the band has been beating the competition in the “Gulf Coast Metal Gods” contest. Drenched in the tradition of bands such as Black Label Society and Pantera, Southern Grudge’s sonic fury cannot be ignored by unsuspecting crowds.
Oracle will also be lending support to this bill. This trio forged its sound in the shadows of the New Orleans metal scene. Oracle will be gracing the crowd with cuts from the band’s latest album, “Hindsight is 2020.” This album features complex and rhythmic metal orchestrations tinged with Norwegian black metal influences. Guttural roars are met by unmerciful riffs mingled with hellish work on the synth.
