To the editor:
I enjoyed reading Sue Brannan Walker’s excellent review of “George Wallace: An Enigma,” by Mary Palmer (Lagniappe, Sept. 29).
In the article, Walker notes that a good biographer, like Palmer, “gives a relevant historical perspective into the life and time of one of America’s most complex, divisive and controversial governors.” In fact, Wallace himself said, “I feel this biography … probably is the most unbiased, objective presentation of my true life story.”
As a civilian employed at Brookley AFB, I was amazed at the support Wallace had in California when I was transferred to Sacramento in 1964 for a short while. No doubt he would have won the presidency with his populist support and shown his true colors as a humanitarian. Thanks for printing a great review.
